Doll House Miniature Scale

What is the Doll House Scale for Making Miniature Scale Furniture

The Doll House Miniature Scale that I refer to on this site is called 1:12 scale. More details in a moment, but first, what do we mean by scale. The dictionaries define scale (as I am referring to it in your model making of miniature scale furniture) is:

A proportion used in determining the dimensional relationship of a representation to that which it represents: Huh?

More simply put: Scale is the proportion that a model is to the real thing that it represents.

So a proportion of 1 to 12 means that 1 (inch, foot, centimeter, meter) in the model equals 12 inches, etc. in the real world piece. It is called 1/12th(one twelfth) scale, 1:12 (one-to-twelve) scale or 1" (1 inch) scale, where 1 foot (12 inches)is understood to be the real world size.

This doll house scale is the most popular in the miniature dollhouse world and when a dollhouse miniature is referred to in general conversation this is the scale most often and usually assumed to be the scale of the discussion.

Making a Miniature in Scale...

This is by far not the only "miniature scale". In fact the model railroad industry sports many different scales (ratios). So many that they even have names for them. HO scale (1:87) for instance is so named because it is Half "O" (1:43 to 1:48) scale.

Model shipbuilding may work with scales and ratios of 1 to 300, 500, 700 and even 1:1200, and, car modelers may work in 1:48 scale. So you can see it depends on the hobby you are in that helps determine the "Scale" of your model.

And just to mention another large hobby area where scale plays an important part is in wargaming. They have their own set of scales that they work with. Many times in the modeling industry when the term Miniatures is used it is referring to war game miniatures. That's one of the reasons why in our hobby we usually preface and say "doll house miniatures", to distinguish ourselves.

1/2" Doll House Miniature Scale...

I can't discuss doll house miniature scale without mentioning the growing trend in our hobby of producing miniature in 1/2" scale. 1/2" to the foot or 1:24 scale is fast growing in popularity throughout the art of dollhouse miniatures, and I discuss 1/2" scale dollhouse further here.

Miniatures Scale Calculator...

I have created an online Miniatures Scale Calculator just for us 1/12 scale dollhouse miniaturists. It converts real world dimensions to and from 1/12 th scale. The calculator shows inches (in), feet (ft), millimeters (mm), and centimeters (cm). Enter any know value in the proper box and all 8 values will be calculated and displayed.
