Dollhouse Miniature Supplies

Materials to Build
Your Own Dollhouse Miniatures

With all of the miniature projects that are possible, your dollhouse miniature supplies and materials can be extensive.

As you begin to work on your preferred projects you will create your own small inventory of dollhouse miniature supplies which will be geared to your likes. I will outline the materials needed at the beginning of each "How to Build a Dollhouse Miniature" project.

Wood Materials for Miniature Furniture...

I do maintain a small inventory of wooden miniature dollhouse supplies for making my miniature furniture. These items are inexpensive and I keep them handy because a good portion of my miniature furniture designs are built around them. I only purchase different size stock to suit specific projects.

Drawing Thumbnail of Miniature Lumber

The items displayed below make up my standard miniature lumber inventory.

Download this handy sheet that shows their equivalent dimensions in the real world. Click on the image, then right click on the new larger image and "save image as". Because its for reference only I didn't fuss with getting the image to print out actual size. (This will open in a new window)

Miniatures Skinny Sticks

Skinny Sticks are one of my favorites to have handy because they are almost scale 1" x 4" lumber and a little over 5 scale feet. This size is common in the real world. Most of my designs are based upon real furniture so I use these a lot. The one set of miniature garden furniture in the outdoor section is made completely from this dollhouse miniature supplies of "lumber".

Miniatures Tougue Depressor

Tongue Depressors are close to scale 1"x 8" lumber and are a scale 6 foot long, so that works for me. I glue these edge to edge, by sanding the edge flat and square, to make larger planks. I use them as sideboards on my miniature child's bed.

Miniatures Tooth Picks

Tooth Picks. I keep square and round handy. They scale out to close to 1" . These can be use for railings or miniature furniture legs. I've glued them together to make 2" x 2" scale posts, usually on something I'll be painting so it looks more solid.

Miniatures Skewers

Bamboo Skewers used for cooking work out to about 1 1/2 in. diameter and are used the same way I use tooth picks. They come in various lengths. The bag of 100 count that I have the skewers are 9 7/8" long (just short of 10 scale feet).

Miniatures Coffee Stirrers

Wooden Coffee Stirrers. I found these in the super market. They scale out at about 1/2" x 2" x 5 1/2'. These come in handy for trim and odd miniature wooden pieces. The miniature wheelbarrow planter is made from this stock.

basswood for making miniatures

Basswood Sheet. These sheets can be found at most craft and hobby stores or department stores with a decent crafts department. They come in various thicknesses and usually measure 4" wide by 24" long. I keep a couple 1/16" thick pieces on hand for making miniature furniture. Inexpensive.

**I have created a real handy 1" Scale Conversion Calculator to assist you in converting from inches/feet to mm/cm and real world to 1" scale.

Miniature Flowers...

Miniatures Flowers

I use real Dried Flowers for my miniature flowers and doll house floral arrangements. Gyp, Candy Tuft and Cashia Basil to name a few. I go to the craft store and look to see what is in scale and buy a bundle. After a few trips I have enough miniature flowers to landscape a whole block of miniature dolls houses. The potted flower on the home page is made this way. To create different color flowers I just put a dab of thinned down paint where I want it.

Other Stuff...

Here's where there is no real "standard" inventory, at least for me, for your dollhouse miniature supplies. I just keep my eyes open and think one inch scale. Map tacks make great miniature furniture draw knobs. A little bag of saw dust for filling my potted plants. A package of craft shapes and rectangles for miniature furniture parts. Beads and jewelry making supplies for the miniature lamp.

If it's small I set it aside for that miniature whatever.

You will soon have your own collection of "other stuff" too. So you may want to start saving small jars or containers to keep them separated. As I mentioned above, as I present each "How to Build a Dollhouse Miniature" project I will outline more miniature dollhouse supplies "stuff".
