Half Scale Dollhouse ...or... 1/2" Scale Dollhouse
Most people relate doll houses and dollhouse miniatures to a hobby mostly engaged in by women. Although women may be in the majority - more and more men have become involved with the half scale dollhouse hobby. With the growing popularity of Garden Railroads, an argument could be made that men are building more "dollhouses" then the women. One of the scales used in Garden railroading is 1/2" to the foot (1:24) scale. We see a growing trend in dollhouse miniatures of the use of the same scale. The items and materials available to the garden railroader are being adopted by the doll house miniaturist and there is a considerable amount of crossover between the two hobbies. I know. Some of the guys are saying "I'm not building dollhouses, I am making scale replicas of the prototype." Sorry guys, but that's exactly what a dollhouse is, a scale replica. Only it's usually twice the size of the one you're building. Perhaps its due to the growing popularity of the garden railroad that has contributed to the increasing popularity of 1/2" scale in dollhouse miniatures. Many of the thoughts, ideas, techniques and materials I discuss here will work equally as well in both 1" and 1/2" scale, and consequently equally as well in both hobbies. I guess it depends on which viewpoint you choose. One hobby is half the size of the other...or...One hobby is twice the size of the other. I believe that with the dollhouse miniaturist adopting 1/2" scale, product availability will increase as the manufacturers realize the expansion of this scale's market area. So if I were to take a stab at the future, it will depend on where the model is displayed. If its in the house on the mantle, its a "dollhouse". If its outside in the garden its a "scale replica". I hope you all take my little observation as lightly as I have intended. But I think you'll have to agree that there are more and more husband/wife "teams" showing up in both hobbies now that there is "common ground" between them.
