Miniature Bed Assembly Step 1...

Dollhouse Miniatures How To Projects

The Miniature Bed Footboard

We begin our miniature bedroom bed by assembling the miniature bed footboard. The first step is to glue the top board to the bottom board as shown in the drawing. We don't need to glue the full length of the joint because it will be re-enforced when we add the trim in a later step.

Miniature Bed Assembly Step 1

I've shown how to assemble the two pieces together resting on top of two tongue depressors. This keeps the glue from gluing the whole sub-assembly to the work surface. When you apply the bead of glue try to use as little as possible - enough to get a good joint but not so much as to have the glue oozing out over the surfaces of the footboard.

As you can see, I use the square as a backup and to keep the ends of the boards flush with each other. Once the glue has set well, I take my sanding block and sand the ends flat and square.

Now take one of the footboard posts and glue it to the footboard.

Miniature Bed Assembly Step 2...

As you can see in the drawing I space the footboard off the work surface with the tongue depressors, align everything using the square and set the location with the other footboard post. As before, try to keep the bead of glue at a minimum so as not to get glue on the faces of the footboard.

Although you may feel that you're not getting enough glue on to make the joints stong, the strength of the sub-assembly and the whole miniature bed for that matter increases as we add additional pieces. Admittedly all of our miniature furniture is somewhat delicate. But as I've mentioned elsewhere, we're no going to have a 200 pound gorilla sleeping in these beds.

Miniature Bed Assembly Step 3...

Once the entire miniature doll house bed is complete, you will be suprised at how strong it becomes.

Now we can repeat the process for the second side. We'll hold off placing the trim on this sub-assembly until we get the rest of the miniature bed sub-assemblies together.
