How To Make A Miniature Bed Mattress

Dollhouse Miniatures How To Projects

The miniature bed mattress is a fairly easy miniature furniture piece to make. I start with a basic foam blank and cover it with fabric.

A standard mattress is about 8-9" thick whereas the box spring is only about 6" thick.

For my miniature mattress I use 3/4" thick foam. The foam cores that I use are the more dense pink foam. This is the foam used most often on the exterior of new homes as insulation.

I've outlined the steps below on How To Make a Miniature Bed Mattress. The instruction are for a full sized bed which would measure 54" x 75" real world. If I'm making the box spring I'll use 1/2" thick foam.

Cut the Miniature Mattress Core Blank...

Cut the foam into a rectangle 4 1/2" x 6 1/4" (11.43 x 15.87 cm). The razor knife is not quite adequate for this cut so I use a utility knife. The knife I like best are the types with the break away blades.

I use the ruler from my carpenter's square and make many passes with my knife to cut through the foam. If you try to cut with too few passes the foam will crumble in front of the knife blade and not come out with a nice clean edge.

Sand the Miniature Mattress Core Edges...

So, we cut the blank and now we can break all the edges with an emery board.

You can see that I take the razor knife and cut the (4) corners first before I sand the edges round. I make the cut to get about a 1/4"(6.35 mm)flat surface then really just break the corners of this cut a little bit.

When I sand the miniature mattress I take three to five strokes at about 45 degrees, then an extra light stroke at a different angle, to make the edges round. I do the miniature mattress all around both top and bottom.

If I'm going to use this to represent a miniature box spring I sand less and leave the bottom almost sharp.

You really don't have to sand any of it round, except for the corners. I sand the whole thing so, once completed, my miniature bedspread or miniature quilt will drape over the miniature mattress better. Because we're not using material that is a scale thickness, I believe it tends to look a little bulky on the finished miniature bed. The rounded edges help to tone that down a bit.

Our next step is to cut the fabric and cover our Miniatue Mattress Foam Blank.
