A Miniatures Sanding Block

A Sanding How To for Clean, Square Edges

Square edges are important on any DIY furniture project. So it is true for our little DIY miniatures furniture. The difference is that we don't have 1" scale routers and edge planners to do the job. In fact some of our miniature furniture parts are so small its tough enough to just hold them in our hand.

When sanding, how to get clean, sharp and square edges is always a hassle. I came up with what I think is an easy way to get the job done. It's my Miniatures Sanding Block.

All you need is a chunk of wood about 1" x 1" x 3 to 4" long, an emery board and some double faced tape. The only important feature is that the block is square on one pair of adjoining 1" x 1" surfaces.

As you can see in the drawing I attach the emery board parallel to the long edge of the block with a little space between the surface that will be on the table top and the edge of the emery board. This prevents the emery board from marring the table top surface.

Sanding Miniature Furniture Parts...

Refer to the drawing to see how I use the miniatures sanding block for sanding miniature furniture parts.

Place the part you want to sand onto your cutting mat with the edge to be sanded hanging over the edge of the mat. Align the piece to the square markings on the mat and aligning the overhanging edge to the "sand to" mark with the edge of the mat. Hold the furniture piece down tightly so it doesn't shift. With your miniatures sanding block on the surface of the table, slide it back and forth, sanding the miniature furniture piece until you have reached the edge of the mat. Use the edge of the mat as a guide to square the sanded edge.

I think you'll find that after cutting a wooden piece with the razor knife, it'll only take a couple of passes with your "miniatures sanding block" to remove the fuzzies, giving you a nice clean, square edge for gluing and or finishing of your DIY miniatures.
